Ceiling for Swissotel — Case Study

Together with IDA14 and Zieta Prozessdesign – over one hundred stainless steel elements with dedicated engravings form an unusual modular ceiling in Swissotel Zürich, showcasing FiDU technology at the architectural scale.

Object developed a method for generative pattern creation. For each of the panels a unique snowflake-like engraving drawing was generated algorithmically.

• The Challenge

  Every panel needed a unique pattern drawing, with a strict fabrication constraint: the engraving length had to stay the same for each snowflake.

• Our Contribution

  We developed an iterative, fractal-like subdivision algorithm that created hundreds of random snowflake patterns in a matter of seconds while respecting the fabrication constraints.

• The Outcome

  An unusual modular ceiling in Swissotel Zürich, demonstrating the possibilities generative design and FiDU technology give at the architectural scale.
